
Panama declares a state of emergency as powerful quake aftershocks rattle communities

Seismic activity on Friday and Saturday in Panama prompted officials to temporarily close Tocumen International Airport, or PTY, in Panama City. Leer en españolOn Saturday, Copa Airlines announced that the temporary closures required additional inspections of the airport’s facilities and runways.“Copa Airlines continues to face extended delays, cancellations and schedule adjustments. The airline recognizes and regrets the impact this situation has had on its passengers,” a company spokesperson wrote in a statement. Copa Airlines also announced flight changes, credits, and refunds without fees or fare differences. This was available to those whose tickets were issued before Friday and whose travel was scheduled between Friday and Oct. 14. Officials in Panama declared a state of emergency on Saturday after 7.7- and 6.6-magnitude earthquakes on Friday and more than 100 aftershocks caused property damage.
